Year 4 - Holly 2022 - 2023
Mrs James
Mrs Del Rio
Welcome to Holly Class home page.
Your teachers are Mrs James (Monday and Tuesday) and Mrs Del Rio (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday).
Class reminders:
Week commencing Monday 24rd April: we will be completing our sponsored skip this week to raise money for wet playtime equipment for our classes. Please send in any sponsor money, along with your sponsor form, in a named envelope by Friday 28th April.
We are hosting a coffee morning for parents on Thursday 25th May to raise money for the Guide Dogs. More information on this to follow.
Topic:
Our topic this half term is called 'Traders and Raiders'. Big and strong, powerful and brave, the Saxons wave their battle axes and brandish their swords as they begin to invade Britain’s shores. Sail back to the Dark Ages, where battles were rife and fear reigned. Find out about the lives of the Saxons, including how they lived and where they came from. Meet the bloodthirsty Vikings from Scandinavia – never before had such terror swept the land. Are you ready to shine a light on the dangerous and deadly Dark Ages?
Our class text this half term will be 'How To Train Your Dragon' by Cresside Cowell.
Homework:
Each week, children will receive 3 pieces of homework - 12 spellings (8 which link to a rule we will have looked at in school and 4 from the year 3/4 statuory word list), one piece of English/topic homework and one piece of maths homework. Homework will be handed out on a Wednesday and should be returned by the following Monday.
In addition to this, year 4 will undertake a statutory multipliaction check during the summer term so it would be extremely helpful if you could practise times tables (up to 12x12) with your child at home. There are lots of times table songs on Youtube which the children love listening to and we have identified some helpful website resources below.

Ways to support your child:
-Practise your child's spellings with them.
-Read (preferably daily) with your child. Try and encourage them to read a range of genre of books and authors. Here are a couple of useful lists of recommended books for year 4 children:
https://www.thereaderteacher.com/year4
-Practise times tables with your child. Little and often is often the best way with times tables. Purple Mash is an excellent resource which has lots of times table activities on. Let Mrs James or Mrs Del Rio know if you have any problems logging on. Here are a few good websites with games that your child can play whilst also practising their times tables:

-Support your child in completing their weekly maths and English/topic homework which is handed out on a Wednesday.
Reading:
Any bit of reading you can do with your child will be hugely benficial. The following link will take you to a list of great books that are recommended for year 4 children: https://shop.scholastic.co.uk/products/Pie-Corbetts-Reading-Spine-Year-4-Pack-x-7-9789951118682
This link will take you to a website that will suggest alternative options if your child enjoys one particular author or genre of book: https://www.booksfortopics.com/booklists/branching-out/
Whilst it is great when a child finds an author or genre that they love, it is also important that they branch out and try alternative authors or genres. The guide above will help you make suggestions for your child to try, based on what they know they already love.
