Please see the summer term newsletter attached for an overview of the children's learning this term.

Redwood Class Spotlight - Summer Term

We have had a fantastic start to the new term in Year 5, with lots of enthusiasm and curiosity already on display.

In English, the children have begun exploring our new class text, Who Let the Gods Out. They have been researching the Greek gods featured in the story, building their knowledge ready to write detailed and engaging biographies. It has been brilliant to see them developing their research skills and confidently sharing fascinating facts about each deity.

In Science, we have started our new topic on the properties of materials. The children have been learning key scientific vocabulary and beginning to describe and compare different materials based on their properties. They have shown great curiosity and have been asking thoughtful questions about the world around them.

In Geography, we have been “touring” Greece, exploring its climate, physical features and famous landmarks. The children have enjoyed locating places on maps and learning more about the country that links so closely to our English learning.

It has been a wonderful start to the term, and we are very proud of how positively the children have returned to their learning.

Please find below some links that you can use to support with spelling at home.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkbkf4j/articles/zbm8scw - This game from BBC is great for working on a range of spellings as well as grammar.

https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/spookySpellings/index.html - This game uses a look, cover and check technique for year 5 & 6 statutory spellings.

https://spellingframe.co.uk/ Has a range of games and activities to help with spelling, some require a subscription but there are also lots that are free to access.

I have also added the mathematical knowledge organisers for all of our units this year, please use these to support your child in their homework. They mirror the teaching methods we use in the classroom.

Homework

Spellings: your child will receive weekly spellings on a Thursday and be tested on these words the following Tuesday

Home learning:   A piece of English home learning or a piece of Maths home learning will be uploaded each week on a Thursday.

Home learning will be uploaded each week in the 'files' section at the bottom of this page. There will be three colours to choose from. Your child will be given a colour every Thursday. The colour will be found in the margin of their home learning book. Select and complete the colour your child has been set.

The three colours are: Blue, Red and Yellow

Reading

Children should be encouraged to have an enjoyment of reading.  They can use their imagination and lose themselves in a book. Therefore, there should be time at home each day for children to be read to and to read independently. They should be encouraged to read a variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction and poetry and asked questions about what they are reading. This will develop their prediction, inference, summarising skills as well as improving their knowledge of vocabulary.

There are many ways you can support your child at home with their learning. Please encourage your child to complete the homework, it is always carefully selected to support their classroom learning and will give you an a further insight into what our classroom tasks look like. Learning spellings with children so they feel confident when tested would also benefit them hugely.

Here are a selection of websites which can help you and your children.
