Key Stage 2 SATs (Year 6)
Each May, children in Year 6 take part in the Key Stage 2 (KS2) Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs). These national tests assess pupils' attainment in English and Mathematics and provide an opportunity for children to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their time in primary school.
The tests usually take place over four days in May and include:
- English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS)
- English Reading
- Mathematics Arithmetic
- Mathematics Reasoning (two papers)
Teacher assessment is also used to determine attainment in Writing and forms an important part of the overall assessment process.
At Budbrooke Primary School, we believe that SATs are only one measure of a child's success. Throughout their primary years, children develop a wide range of skills, talents and personal qualities that cannot be captured in a test. Our aim is to ensure that pupils approach SATs with confidence, resilience and a positive attitude, knowing that they are simply an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned.
Our staff work hard to prepare pupils thoroughly through high-quality teaching, regular practice and targeted support where needed. We also place a strong emphasis on pupil wellbeing, helping children to manage any worries and maintain a healthy balance during the assessment period.
The KS2 SATs for pupils in Year 6 are expected to take place during week commencing 10th May 2027, with specific timetabling confirmed closer to the time. We will provide families with further information, guidance and support throughout the academic year to ensure that both children and parents feel well prepared.

Key Stage 1 Optional Assessments (Year 2)
At Budbrooke Primary School, we use the optional Key Stage 1 assessment materials as one of a range of tools to help teachers understand each child's progress and attainment. These assessments provide valuable information that supports teachers' professional judgements and helps ensure that every child receives the right level of challenge and support.
Unlike the statutory Key Stage 2 SATs taken in Year 6, these assessments are approached in a very different way. Children complete activities in a familiar classroom environment, often without realising they are taking part in an assessment. Our focus is on helping pupils feel confident, secure and successful, rather than placing them under any unnecessary pressure.
Teachers draw on evidence collected throughout the year, including day-to-day classwork, observations, discussions and assessment activities, to build a complete picture of each child's attainment. The optional assessment materials simply provide an additional source of information to support this process.
We believe that children perform best when they feel relaxed and happy. Therefore, we do not place undue emphasis on these assessments and ensure that learning remains engaging, enjoyable and relevant throughout Year 2. Parents can be reassured that the wellbeing of our pupils always comes first, and that no child should feel anxious or stressed about taking part in these activities.
